15. The Guilt Trip

This movie probably hits home for a lot us… or may that’s just me. There really could be no better pairing than Barbra Streisand and Seth Rogen. The film tells the story of a mother-son road trip, with ulterior motives. Andy Brewster (Rogen) is an inventor and is trying to get his product, ScieoClean, in a major retail store, but he’s not having much luck. When he visits his mother, Joyce Brewster (Streisand), she reveals to him that he was named after a boy she fell in love when she was younger. He ends up finding the man and invites his unknowing mother on a trip, claiming he wants to spend some time with her.

It’s cute, it’s funny (not hilarious) and of course at times heartwarming. The chemistry between the lead actors (who also serve as executive producers) is undeniable.

The film didn’t do that great in the box office, only $5.3 million in its opening weekend (it ultimately grossed $37.1 million in the US and $4.7 million elsewhere) and the critics were not that excited about it, but honestly everything Rogen does it good in my book.

Honorable Mention: Like Father

I wanted to toss this Netflix Original in the list, but it felt like it didn’t place right anywhere but in the honorable mention category. It’s pretty new, just came out this year, and it’s only on Netflix so it doesn’t have the same feel as a full-length feature film.

It stars Kristen Bell, Kelsey Grammer, and Rogen, and follows a woman (Bell) who must bond with her estranged father (Grammer) on a cruise after she is left at the altar. Rogen plays a fellow cruise patron whom Bell sleeps with and cannot seem to get rid of. His character is so sweet and sad and totally lovable that you can’t help but want to shake Bell for treating him so badly.

Unfortunately, it hasn’t gotten the best reviews. One review on Rotten Tomatoes said, “Like Father unites an alarmingly talented cast for a predictable rom-com that does nothing to counter the negative stereotypes surrounding the genre.”

Well maybe that’s why I liked it then, because I love rom-coms.
