Tottenham: Key players underperforming

Ok, the easy answer to this for Spurs would be the shambolic roll out of their new stadium, which is still delayed. As a result, Spurs have had to create a makeshift home at Wembley as they wait for the finishing touches on the new White Hart Lane. Through all of this, Mauricio Pochettino’s teams have fought through distractions and found some great form as of late after a disappointing early-season loss to Watford.

Spurs didn’t make any summer signings, much to the chagrin of their fanbase, but they’ve had recent signings step up in big ways. Lucas Moura has looked like a player re-born, making daring cross-pitch runs and scoring some fine goals, including his memorable brace at United. Even Erik Lamela, who has been injured for long spells in his Spurs career, has show flashes of brilliance in his recent appearances. Against London rival West Ham, Lamela scored the decisive goal and looked energetic and confident in his new role.

So with all of the good coming from recent signings, it’s time to highlight what many Spurs fans fear the most: Some key members of the core are underperforming. Harry Kane’s shooting numbers have been way down — and there are still no viable options behind him — Mousa Dembele looks like a ghost of his former self, and isn’t getting any younger, Dele Alli has missed most of the season with injury and Toby Alderweireld hasn’t been up to his usual standards after falling out of the starting XI last season. Spurs simply don’t have a big enough squad for any of their key players to go through extended periods of bad form.
