Fantasy Football 2018: Top 10 waiver wire Week 9 pickups
6. Courtland Sutton, WR, Denver Broncos
A second-round rookie out of SMU, Courtland Sutton was always groomed for a starting opportunity on the Denver Broncos, and that chance will come in Week 9 after Denver found a trade partner for Demaryius Thomas. While Thomas has been an icon for the Broncos for years as a Super Bowl champion and an elite receiver, his best days are behind him. Sutton could very well be an upgrade, especially since he’s looked explosive and pro-ready in his appearances this year.
Last week, Sutton gave the Broncos confidence that he could step in for Thomas as a starter by catching 3 passes for a career-high 78 yards in a closer-than-expected loss to the rival Kansas City Chiefs. Sutton is 6’4″ and has both big-play and touchdown-scoring potential.
The Broncos weren’t interested in trading Emmanuel Sanders despite receiving legitimate offers fo the versatile No. 1 wide receiver, so Sanders can help take some pressure off of Sutton, giving the promising rookie more space to work with.
Denver is high on Sutton, who was mentored by Thomas this season, and fantasy owners should feel the same way about a wide receiver averaging 19.1 yards per reception in 2018. The talent is there, and with Thomas out of the picture, the targets are ripe for the taking.
