Four teams from the top 10 squared off with each other in Week 9 leading to a big shakeup in the latest Group of 5 power rankings.

It was certainly an interesting week for the Group of 5. Appalachian State and South Florida were ranked second and third in these rankings, respectively, and were two of the three Group of 5 teams ranked in AP Top 25. Both teams hit the road in Week 9. Both teams were facing challengers that were also in the Group of 5 top 10.

Both were handed disappointing defeats. Their losses opened up the top of the rankings to give a few other teams their spot in the Sun. Three quarterbacks have been playing standout football all year. They now have Houston, Utah St. and Fresno St. moving up in the rankings, as well as earning national recognition.

Group of 5 power rankings entering Week 10

10. San Diego State Aztecs (Mountain West Conference) 6-2

The offense wasn’t the problem for San Diego State in the first half in Week 9. Quarterback Ryan Agnew threw three first-half touchdowns–two to Kahale Warring–to give the Aztecs a 24-15 halftime lead.

But the second half was a different story. Of the team’s six second-half possessions, they punted four times and turned the ball over on downs once.

Meanwhile, Nevada took a 28-24 lead with a touchdown and two field goals. San Diego’s last possession started at their own one-yard line, and the team did move the ball across midfield, but a Hail Mary attempt was knocked away as time expired.

The Aztecs’ first loss since their season-opening game against Stanford drops them to ten in the rankings.

Up next: Saturday at New Mexico.

9. Buffalo Bulls (Mid-American Conference) 7-1

The Bulls were off over the weekend, but they have a Tuesday night game hosting Miami (Ohio) in Week 10. The Tuesday night matchup is the first of four consecutive non-Saturday games as the Bulls finish their season.

Buffalo currently leads the MAC East with a 4-0 conference record. Miami is tied for second at 3-1. Ohio is also 3-1 and will host the Bulls November 14. A division title and spot in the MAC Title game will not be easy to come by for Buffalo. The good news for the Bulls is their other two games are against Bowling Green and Kent State, who are both 0-4 in conference and 1-7 overall.

Up next: November 6 vs. Kent State.
