4. Seth Littrell, North Texas head coach

Littrell led North Texas to nine wins and the Conference USA title game last year, in his second season as head coach, and spurred by the school’s best start in 30 years (6-1) the Mean Green is 7-2 this season.

Led by quarterback Mason Fine, who is second in FBS in passing yards (2,879) entering this week, North Texas is top-25 the country in total offense (472 yards per game; 18th), passing offense (325.8 yards per game; 12th) and scoring offense (37.9 points per game; 24th).

Littrell is just 40 years old, but he paid his dues as he has worked his way up the coaching ladder. He started as a grad assistant under Mark Mangino at Kansas (2002-2004), then worked under Mike Leach at Texas Tech (2005-2008), Mike Stoops at Arizona, Kevin Wilson at Indiana and Larry Fedora at North Carolina. He spent two years as offensive coordinator at Indiana (2012-2013), and the Hoosiers finished second in the Big Ten in total offense both years.

Maryland will have to think outside the box as they seek a new football coach, with the factors working against them now in recruiting. Littrell will be on the radar of Power 5 schools, but he seems to be an outside-the-box thinker befitting of being an outside-the-box hire in College Park.
