8. Houston Cougars (AAC) 7-2

There must have been something in the water in Houston in Week 9. Houston joins USF in suffering a disappointing upset loss a week after the teams squared off.

The Cougars climbed up to fourth in these rankings and into the top 20 of the national polls after the win. They face a steep drop after a 45-31 loss to SMU. Like the Bulls, Houston had a hard time getting their offense going in Week 10. They trailed 17-0 early in the second quarter and 31-14 at halftime.

The defense also failed the Cougars, giving up 514 yards to the Mustangs. The team expected to have All-American defensive lineman Ed Oliver back, but after a pregame workout, he was held out for the second consecutive game.

Up next: Saturday vs. Temple.

7. Buffalo Bulls (Mid-American Conference) 9-1

College football’s mid-week darlings move up a few spots after a shootout victory last Tuesday. Quarterback Tyree Jackson accounted for six total touchdowns, three rushing and three passing, in Buffalo’s 51-42 win over Miami (OH) in Week 10. Wide receiver Anthony Johnson was Jackson’s favorite target. His eight catches went for 238 yards and all three of Jackson’s passing scores.

Buffalo improved to 9-1 on Tuesday night with a 42-14 win over Kent State behind 187 yards and two touchdowns from Jaret Patterson.

Up Next: Nov. 14 at Ohio.
