4. Appalachian State Mountaineers (Sun Belt Conference) 6-2

The Mountaineers bounced back after their Week 9 loss to Georgia Southern with a 23-7 win over Coastal Carolina. Starting quarterback Zac Thomas missed the game after leaving the last game early with a concussion. Backup Jacob Huesman was uneven as his replacement. Huesman completed only nine of his 19 passes for 127 yards, with one touchdown and two interceptions.

The Mountaineer offense turned to the running game instead. Darrynton Evans and Marcus Williams, Jr. combined for 262 yards on 46 carries, with one touchdown each. The defense did their part as well. They pitched a shutout (the Chanticleers’ only points came on an interception return) and held CCU to 178 yards of offense, while also getting a safety. The team expects to get Thomas back for this weekend.

Up next: Saturday at Texas State.

3. Utah State Aggies (MWC) 8-1

Utah State flew out to the Hawaiian Islands in Week 10 and came away with a 56-17 victory. That is the Aggies eighth straight win since their season-opening loss to Michigan State. The team is starting to get some national attention. They have moved up to 14 in the AP poll and 16 in the Coaches’.

Hawaii is not known for their defense, and they certainly didn’t have much success slowing down Utah State’s offense. The Aggies piled up 601 total yards. Darwin Thompson (141) and Gerold Bright (121) each ran for more than 100 yards and three touchdowns.

They shouldn’t have much trouble this weekend with lowly San Jose State coming to town, but a match-up with Boise State lingers in two weeks which will likely decide their division title.

Up next: Saturday vs. San Jose State.
