4. Madison Bumgarner

This is the Yankees rumor that simply won’t die. There isn’t a ton of smoke regarding Bumgarner at the moment, but this is the guy that Cashman wants to acquire the most.

In many ways, adding the Giants ace would correct the questionable choices to pass on the likes of Verlander and Cole in recent years. He’s a bona fide ace that can carry the Yankees rotation in October. There aren’t many players like that in baseball. There are even fewer pitchers of that caliber who might be available for the right price.

Make no mistake, it would require a godfather offer to get a deal done with San Francisco. We’re talking about a deal that would probably require Justus Sheffield, Estevan Florial and more. It would be a very steep price for the Yankees, but it is the kind of move that could pay off with a World Series title.

It’s important to note that Bumgarner is the youngest player on this list. He has been in the league for quite some time, but he’s still squarely in his prime. He bounced back from injury issues to throw over 129 innings with an ERA of 3.26 last season. That’s ace level production. He’s the best possible player the Yankees can add this winter.
