2. Corey Kluber

When news broke that the Indians were willing to part with Corey Kluber, Yankees fans on social media immediately started dreaming about him donning pinstripes. Cashman has met with the Indians about their ace, but don’t expect a deal to come together quickly.

The reason the Indians leaked their willingness to part with Kluber was to spark a bidding war among teams that might be interested in making a move for an ace pitcher this offseason. The Yankees are one of those teams, but they aren’t the only franchise trying to upgrade the top of their starting rotation.

With that being said, expect the Yankees to stay in the race to acquire Kluber until the very end. He’s just the sort of dominant arm they want to build their October rotation around. Kluber was a warhorse for the Tribe last year. He threw 215 innings with an ERA of 2.89 last year. He’ll be 33 next season, but nothing about his recent performance seems to portend an imminent decline. His reasonable contract also makes him attractive to the Yankees.

Cashman’s strategy on Kluber will be to use the threat of acquiring Paxton to keep the price down. Time will tell whether or not that plan ends with the acquisition of Cleveland’s top pitcher.
