NFL hot seat watch: Carousel looms after Week 10 fallout

5. Jason Garrett, Dallas Cowboys
The NFC East is the worst division in the NFL this year, and yet there’s been little confidence that the Dallas Cowboys could ever take advantage of the favorable situation. That falls on the head coach for failing to develop himself and the team.
It’s time for the Dallas Cowboys to part with head coach Jason Garrett. The seventh-year head coach has just two playoff appearances in that timeframe, and has often driven the Cowboys into a mediocre season. This franchise needs a breath of fresh air.
Dallas has some positives in their favor. They have a young roster with several talents worth building on. Ezekiel Elliott, Amari Cooper, their offensive line, Byron Jones, and their defensive front seven are all legitimate assets. A more creative offensive scheme could also get more from quarterback Dak Prescott.
But there are negatives, too.
Owner Jerry Jones has gravitated towards coaches he can control and override with ease, hence why Garrett has been in place so long. He’s also already committed to Prescott, which could be a major issue for a new coach. Their cap situation isn’t pretty either.
An interesting dynamic is that the premier head coach, Lincoln Riley, is from Lubbock, Texas, and would stay relatively close to home. Ian Rapoport of NFL.com reported he’d be their top choice if they fire Garrett. But it remains to be seen as to whether Riley is even interested in the NFL at this point in his young career.
Coordinators like Pete Carmichael, Dave Toub, John Defilippo, or Eric Bieniemy should earn an interview here if Riley passes. Each are well-regarded, and three of the four are star offensive coordinators.
