4. Fresno State Bulldogs (MWC) 9-2

The West division of the Mountain West was clinched by Fresno State last weekend with a 23-14 win over San Diego State. The Bulldogs will travel to Utah State or Boise State next weekend for a chance at the conference crown.

San Diego State receiver Fred Trevillion caught two long touchdown passes to give the Aztecs a 14-10 lead at halftime. But the Bulldogs defense pitched a shutout in the second half, allowing the offense to take a lead and get the win. Fresno State gets back in the Coaches Poll at 23 this week.

Marcus McMaryion threw for 267 yards on 17/24 passing. Ten of those completions went to KeeSean Johnson for 141 yards. McMaryion got the scoring started on the Bulldogs’ first possession with an 86-yard bomb to Jamire Jordan.

Up next: Saturday vs. San Jose State.

3. Appalachian State Mountaineers (SBC) 8-2

When I play Madden (or NCAA Football back in the old days), I try to get all my top players their numbers, 300 yards for the quarterback, 100 yards for the running back, 100 yards for a receiver or two. That was the kind of game it was for Appalachian State last week in its 45-17 victory versus Georgia State.

Zach Thomas was 20 of 24 passing for 282 yards and three touchdowns. Darrynton Evans led the team with 127 yards and a score on 15 rushes. Corey Sutton hit the century mark receiving, with four catches for 101 yards and a touchdown.

The stats likely won’t come as easily this weekend, as the Mountaineers host Troy with the division title on the line.

Up next: Saturday vs. Troy.
