Claudio Ranieri, the legendary title-winning coach of Leicester’s magical 2015-16 season, is back in the Premier League and makes his managerial debut for bottom-of-the-table Fulham as the road to survival begins for the Cottagers with an important Premier League matchup at Craven Cottage on Saturday afternoon against a struggling Southampton side.
Ranieri, who takes over Fulham from Slavisa Jokanovic, has a difficult challenge ahead of him if he has hopes of keeping the Cottagers in the Premier League for next season. The 67-year-old Italian will need to find a way to shore up the Premier League’s worst defense, with the Cottagers having conceded 31 goals in just 12 Premier League matches.
The Cottagers, who lost 2-0 to Liverpool last time out, sit firmly at the foot of the Premier League table with a paltry five points, having only won once this season. Ranieri must bring a more defensive mindset to London in order to stave off relegation.
Southampton come into Saturday’s match sitting in 17th place in the Premier League table with only eight points from twelve matches. The Saints, who managed a 1-1 draw at home to Watford the last time out, have also only won once this Premier League season.
Southampton boss Mark Hughes has been under pressure and must find a way to get more offensive production from his team. The Saints have only scored twice in their last seven Premier League matches and will try to spoil Ranieri’s debut by getting off the mark against the league’s worst defense.
The Cottagers last played host to the Saints in the Premier League back in February 2014 with the Saints running out 3-0 winners at Craven Cottage.
