NBA Rookie Rankings: Who is the best pure scorer?
4. Collin Sexton
The Cavaliers aren’t going anywhere this season, but Sexton’s recent emergence has at least given Cleveland fans something to latch onto. He has a long way to go before he becomes an effective distributor, but he already knows how to get to the basket and finish.
Perhaps more importantly, Sexton is shooting the ball much better than most expected at this point in his young career. He’s probably not going to shoot just under 42 percent from 3 all year, but he looks comfortable taking long shots off the catch or dribble. With his athleticism, if he can prove to defenses that he’s an average 3-point shooter it’s going to make him almost impossible to guard.
Sexton is at his best when he’s able to get downhill and attack the rim. His current supporting cast in Cleveland doesn’t give him a ton of space, but when he sees a sliver of daylight he’s quick to pounce on it.
It’ll be very interesting to see what Kevin Love’s return can do for Sexton. Cleveland’s primary offensive action should be to get those two together on pick and rolls. Once that happens, Sexton will have a real chance to become a more efficient player in all aspects of his offensive game.
