1. Vasyl Lomachenko

11-1, 9 KOs

Previous Ranking: 1

This should not come as much of a surprise, but Lomachenko has retained his spot at number one pound for pound. There is not much to say about Loma other than “wow.”

Putting on a Lomachenko fight for a casual sports fan will leave them speechless. His hand speed is impressive, his style is unique and exciting, and his footwork is a thing of beauty. He epitomizes the sweet science, and is a pleasure to watch.

Lomachenko was last seen in action when he moved up to lightweight and challenged champion Jorge Linares. The fight was fantastic, and Linares was able to be very competitive before ultimately being stopped in the 10th round from a perfect shot.

It is rare for a fighter to move up multiple weight classes and fight multiple champions in just 12 fights, but Lomachenko is a rare fighter. He is the greatest amateur boxer of all time and is currently the best professional fighter in the world.

Following the Linares fight, Lomachenko had shoulder surgery, and has been out of action since. He will return in December in a unification fight with fellow champion Jose Pedraza.

It appears as though moving up any more weight classes would be against his own interest, but that is okay because there is a potential mega fight in the division with fellow lightweight champion Mikey Garcia. There are some roadblocks in making that fight, but it is one of the best fights to make in the sport.
