After 13 games, Southampton and Manchester United both need to start stringing together wins if they are going to meet expectations. Southampton are in the bottom three with only eight points. On Saturday, the Saints host United at St. Mary’s Stadium. The Red Devils are off to a disappointing start and enter the weekend in seventh place with 21 points.
Southampton lost 3-2 to Fulham last weekend. The Saints have not won a game since Sept. 1, when they beat Crystal Palace. Mark Hughes started last season as the manager of Stoke but was fired partway through the season with the Potters at the bottom of the table. Hughes could get fired again with his club again at the bottom of the table. Southampton struggle to score goals and struggle to defend. Only two teams have scored fewer goals and only three teams have allowed more goals. The Saints will have to get better in both aspects if they are going to avoid relegation. Southampton will rely on Danny Ings to lead the attack against United. Ings leads the club with four goals this season.
Manchester United advantage to the knockout stage of the Champions League after beating Young Boys 1-0 on Tuesday. In the Premier League, Manchester United have had a disappointing season. In their last game, United were held to a scoreless draw at Old Trafford by Crystal Palace. With one-third of the season played, United are seven points behind Chelsea for fourth place and 14 points behind Manchester City for first. The Red Devils have allowed more goals than they have scored this season and will have to clean up their mistakes at the back if they are going to finish in the top four.
