The day before nomination day, the Hollywood Foreign Press finally announced the co-hosts for the 2019 Golden Globe Awards.

The Golden Globes are but a month away — Jan. 6, mark your calendars, award season fans! — and at long last we know who will be hosting: Andy Samberg and Sandra Oh.

Samberg stars on the Mike Schur ensemble Brooklyn Nine-Nine, which returns for a new season in January and made headlines this past year when an outpouring of fan support after FOX canceled the show may or may not have contributed to NBC picking up the comedy. He’s previously best known for his work on Saturday Night Live. Sandra Oh finally received the leading role longtime Christina Yang fans knew she deserved on the breakout thriller Killing Eve. She’s expected to receive a Globe nomination for the performance.

The two most recently presented Best Director together at the 2018 Emmys.

The announcement came later than usual this year and entertainment media and fans speculated wildly who it could be. There was no clear frontrunner or rumored favorite. Somewhat surprisingly, the return of Ricky Gervais topped Gold Derby’s reader poll, but he certainly isn’t the only choice. Michelle Wolff, Tiffany Haddish and Kristen Bell are all favorites. Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon and Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer have been suggested. Even Steve Carrell is in the mix.

The past three years, the Golden Globes have been hosted by men — Seth Meyers, Jimmy Fallon and Ricky Gervais — so it’s no surprise many would like to see the HFPA pass the mic back to a woman. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler’s three-show run between 2013 and 2015 is appropriately regarded as the high-bar for Globes hosting.

There is, of course, the chance that the Golden Globes go with no host. Before Ricky Gervais hosted in 2010, the award ceremony had only had one hosted show, with John Larroquette and Janine Turner sharing duties in 1995, in its 65 year run. The case to leave the Globes without a host rests largely on the show’s reputation for being slightly out of control to begin with. More so than other award shows, the award announcers get the best jokes and go increasingly off-script (thanks in no small part to all the champagne). The cameras catch more (and better) reactions. The stars provide their own (and consequently viewers’) entertainment, the host is a lot less necessary to keep the mood light or offer jokes between categories. The Globes are self-sufficient in supplying those in spades.

In other award season hosting news, Kevin Hart will be hosting the 2019 Academy Awards. Do with that information what you will.
