The Revierderby between Schalke and Borussia Dortmund is one of the fiercest regional rivalries in the Bundesliga. Last season, the two clubs played an instant classic, that saw Dortmund scored four goals in the first 25 minutes but Schalke was able to score four goals in the final half hour. A lot can change in a year. Last year, Schalke finished second, just ahead of Dortmund. This season, Dortmund are first, holding a seven-point edge on Borussia Monchengladbach. The Royal Blues are 12th with 14 points.

Dortmund have been brilliant this season. Lucien Favre’s arrival in the summer was met with skepticism as people were unsure how he would fit with the club. Favre has given opportunities to younger players who have excelled this season. Jadon Sancho is only 18 years old but isn’t playing like one. Sancho has four goals and seven assists this season. All of Dortmund’s summer additions have worked out incredibly for the club. Thomas Delaney and Axel Witsel have helped remake the Dortmund midfield, while Paco Alcacer is the leading scorer with 10 goals despite playing only 281 minutes.

Schalke lost the first five games of the season and have struggled to recover. The biggest problem for the Royal Blues this season has been their inability to score goals. Schalke have scored 14 goals this season five less than Alcacer and Marco Reus have combined for. Strikers Mark Uth and Breel Embolo are both injured and will miss the game, leaving Schalke to rely on Guido Burgstaller. Nabil Bentaleb has been the Royal Blues best player this season, scoring three goals.
