The Mushy Middle

PAR LINDHOLM. B. If the Maple Leafs look to remain competitive for a relatively long window over the course of the next few seasons, expect more players like Lindholm to enter into the ranks of the organization. Fresh from the Swedish league, the 27-year-old has served as an adequate bottom-six guy, known primarily for his reliability in the faceoff circle, on the penalty kill and amidst shifts following the conclusion of powerplays.. C/LW. TOR

TYLER ENNIS. B. Ennis was brought in to serve as yet another tool for Babcock to deploy within his bottom-six — and boy, has he demonstrated an ability to deliver on this particular front. Although he’s quiet on some evenings, Ennis’ flashes of offensive brilliance are a rare feat across fourth lines at hockey’s highest level of play, and his capacity for clutch goal-scoring continues to come in handy on nights in which his teammates look to be asleep.. LW/RW.

B/B-. There are moments when Marleau continues to defy any and all odds — netting pucks, beating defenders and providing the Buds with a relatively strong net-front presence. At others, Marleau is all but invisible. Babcock’s decision to put the 39-year-old on Matthews’ wing has been met with a reasonable degree of disappointment, as — at times — the veteran looks to have lost a step or two. Marleau’s experience is invaluable and his ability to come in clutch continues to emerge from time to time, so look for him to produce more as lines are tinkered with.. LW. TOR. PATRICK MARLEAU

B/B-. Johnsson had quite the rough start to the regular season, producing just one point in his first ten games. But lately, the 24-year-old has looked stellar — a factor that was most apparent when he netted a quick hat-trick against the Philadelphia Flyers on Nov. 24. Expect the forward to produce even more as Babcock experiments with moving him to Matthews’ wing.. LW. TOR. ANDREAS JOHNSSON

RW. TOR. CONNOR BROWN. B-. Most teams would kill for a guy like Brown — primarily because of the sense of consistency that underlines the winger’s ability to usher forth defensive responsibility. Fundamentally reliable in both his own end and on the penalty kill, the 24-year-old’s lack of offensive output has been a subject of concern among fans and critics — especially in light of the fact that $2.1 million of the Maple Leafs’ cap space shall be allocated to a player whose resting spot is the club’s fourth line. That said, expect Brown’s grade to ascend if he starts to bury some more pucks.

IGOR OZHIGANOV. B-. With a relatively small sample size to evaluate, Ozhiganov has been one of the more invisible players in Babcock’s roster — and that’s not necessarily a bad thing. He netted a memorable career-first goal in a victory against the Boston Bruins, but has not produced much in 27 games. Ozhiganov has also made his fair share of rookie mistakes, but his tenure with Toronto has hitherto been decent — nothing more, nothing less.. D. TOR
