Suffering their heaviest ever home loss in European competition was hardly the best way for Real Madrid to prepare for this game. Yes, they fielded a weakened team against CSKA Moscow, and Madrid were all but assured of topping their group regardless of the outcome. But the team they put out still included the likes of Thibaut Courtois, Marcelo, Karim Benzema and Isco, while Gareth Bale, Dani Carvajal and Toni Kroos all came off the bench.
That chastening Madrid loss came off the back of a very fortunate away win over Huesca last Sunday, in which La Liga’s bottom side created the better chances and were unlucky not to register their first home victory in the Spanish top flight.
This game is one of the minor Madrid derbies, with Rayo Vallecano hailing from Vallecas in the south-east of the Spanish capital. They’re currently second from bottom in La Liga, with just two wins all season and the equal-worst defense in the division. Nonetheless, Míchel’s side can take heart from the way in which Madrid have performed badly against other struggling teams over the past week.
