4. Mike McCarthy

McCarthy was fired after the Packers looked patently uninspired in a bad loss to the Arizona Cardinals a couple weeks ago, as things took a quick downturn. But a .618 regular season winning percentage over almost 13 seasons (125-77-2) and a Super Bowl win assures he’ll be employed next season if he wants to be, with the New York Jets and Cleveland Browns standing as his top two potential destinations.

The question specific to the Broncos regarding McCarthy is the perception Green Bay’s offense grew over the last few years. And that was with Aaron Rodgers at quarterback, outside of missed time with a broken collarbone last year. Barring a move for a veteran or an early draft pick rookie coming in winning the job, the Broncos will have Case Keenum starting under center next year. An offense that hasn’t been creative and sub-par quarterback play is not a good mix, and it’s hard to see McCarthy hiring a real offensive coordinator to take over play calling or bring a completely fresh perspective.

But McCarthy will have some level of candidacy for any upcoming opening, unless he withdraws himself from consideration with an eye on taking a year off.
