On paper at least, Atletico Madrid’s season has gone well – they’re third in La Liga, just three points off the top, and they qualified from a potentially tricky Champions League group with a game to spare. On the pitch, however, their performances have tended to be less convincing.
Atleti do nonetheless still have the best defence in La Liga, although that back line could be unsettled if the rumours that Bayern Munich are preparing to meet Lucas Hernandez’s $91m release clause in January turn out to be true.
Espanyol presently lie in 11th place, which was precisely where they finished last season. At this juncture in the 2017-18 campaign they were five points above the relegation zone, and they’re currently six points above the drop zone. Expectations were certainly higher when new manager Rubi was brought in from Huesca in the summer. His side are on an awful run of five straight league losses at the moment, conceding three or more goals in four of those games.
