What a way for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to start his United managerial career. Not only is he returning to Manchester United for the the first time in a long time, he is also returning to Cardiff, a club he managed briefly during their last spell in the Premier League.
Cardiff have moved on from him, and moved on well, snagging victories in recent weeks, and competing well above their weight. The question that needs to be answered however, is will United have moved on from Mourinho following his dismissal? Even the most ardent Mourinho supporters will find it hard to give a reason as to why Mourinho should have stayed. Critics have been scathing in recent weeks, and the atmosphere at Old Trafford has been dour. Mourinho’s 3 year cycle came to an end early amidst a toxic atmosphere similar to his demise at Chelsea. Mourinho needs a serious reassessing of his managerial tactics, but so do United as a club.
Paul Pogba has emerged a winner in his personal battle with Mourinho, but now will really be the time for him to show his worth. Under new manager Solskjaer who has won multiple titles in his homeland with Molde, underperforming Man United players have to pull their socks up. They have no more excuses to hide behind.
Cardiff represent a potential banana skin, but Solskjaer couldn’t have asked for an easier fixture on paper. Cardiff are a plucky side and have had the knack of picking up good results at home in recent weeks. They will look at this ailing United side and see a weakness. But the unpredictablility surrounding Solskjaer and his first match could also mean a galvanized Man United team out for blood. United first and foremost need a good result, and Cardiff will be a tricky opponent to face.
