Dave Toub

A name that always pops up in coaching discussions around this time of year is Kansas City special teams coordinator Dave Toub. He’s known for being one of the smartest guys in the league at that coaching position, and the numbers back it up.

According to Football Outsiders, Kansas City’s special teams unit ranks second in the NFL this year in special teams DVOA. They’ve ranked first in the statistic two times since Toub started calling the shots on special teams in 2013.

The Broncos interviewed Toub back in 2017 when they were searching for a head coach. They wound up opting to go the Vance Joseph route instead.

We’ve all seen how guys who come from the Andy Reid coaching tree go on to succeed elsewhere in the league. Doug Pederson won a Super Bowl in just his second year as the head coach in Philadelphia. Matt Nagy led the Bears to a division title in his first year as Chicago’s head coach. And, Frank Reich is now a game away from taking the Colts to the playoffs in his first year on the job.

Reid obviously knows how to prepare his assistants for their own head coaching stints, and Toub may very well be the next one we see flourish.
