2019 NFL mock draft: Giants take Dwayne Haskins
By Brad Weiss
With their second of three first round picks next April, the Oakland Raiders may choose to bolster the secondary. In two of the last three NFL Drafts, the Raiders have focused a first round draft pick on the defensive backfield, selecting West Virginia safety Karl Joseph in 2016, and Ohio State cornerback Gareon Conley in 2017.
While both Joseph and Conley struggled to start their NFL careers, they really took a step in the right direction in 2018 under new defensive coordinator Paul Guenther, and should be pieces for the team moving forward. While Conley shined, he needs some help at cornerback, and Byron Murphy is a guy who should be a first round pick in 2019.
In Murphy, the Raiders would be getting another elite college cornerback, and a guy they could team with Conley at the two cornerback spots for years to come. Murphy ended his Pac-12 career with a huge pick-six in the Pac-12 title game, winning the game for the Washington Huskies, and sending them to Tuesday’s Rose Bowl against Ohio State.
Oakland’s defense actually played a lot better down the stretch, and they are starting to get the piece in place to turn the corner. Using their first two first round picks on that side of the ball makes sense, and after being such a weakness over the years, the cornerback position could end up being a strength with Conley and Murphy as the starters.
