4. Strengthen the secondary

There’s no question where the Texans defense struggled the most during the 2018 campaign. The team’s secondary looked lost against quality offensive attacks. There are plenty of reasons they finished 28th in the league in yards per game against the pass.

The challenge for the Texans is that there aren’t a lot of great secondary options in free agency. Combine that with the fact that boy Tyrann Mathieu and Kareem Jackson are hitting the open market and it’s easy to imagine a scenario where the Texans pass defense actually gets worse.

Clearly that’s not something the organization can afford to let occur. The higher-ups will certainly hope Kevin Johnson bounces back and Justin Reid improves in his second season in the NFL. Andre Hal should also be better one full offseason after recovering from a terrifying battle with cancer.

Even if all that occurs, expect to see the team spend some of its draft capital trying to strengthen this group. Adding another cornerback who can, at the very least, play the nickel slot next season is a must. If the right outside corner is available early in the draft he’ll also get a long look for the front office.

Somehow, someway the Texans have to get better against the pass next year. There are a lot of ways to get that done, but an upgrade in personnel is required.
