6. Deionte Thompson, Safety, Alabama

This year’s safety class is considered to be a relatively weak one coming into the offseason this year, but Thompson looks like the next great Alabama product. One year after the departure of Minkah Fitzpatrick, who was drafted with the 11th overall pick, another Alabama safety could go midway through the first round.

Thompson brings good explosiveness off the line and has range when playing “centerfield” safety. He’s also played well in run support this year and could be a good plug-and-play option for an NFL team drafting in the middle of the first round.

He could be one of the most important players for this Alabama team in this year’s National Championship game, as in order for the Tide to win their third Playoff matchup against the Tigers, they’ll need someone to control the dynamic downfield offense led by Trevor Lawrence.

5. Dexter Lawrence, Defensive Tackle, Clemson

First, it should be noted Dexter Lawrence won’t appear in the National Championship after testing positive for a banned substance prior to the Cotton Bowl. Despite that, he still looks like a lock to go at least in the middle of the first round and is one of the year’s most exciting prospects.

Lawrence is a unique talent on the defensive line being that he has plus size for the defensive line, standing at 6-foot-4 and weighing 340 pounds., and still has the acceleration speed off the snap that could potentially allow him some flexibility of scheme-fit. Lawrence has showcased a great repertoire of pass-rushing moves, and has been competent in the run block. Clemson’s offensive line is stacked with NFL Draft prospects, and even if Lawrence doesn’t play in the National Championship game, it’ll be all eyes on the men in the trenches.
