Sign Theo Riddick if the Lions move on, or another pass-catching back

This one is looking a bit ahead, and predicting what teams might do, but with Kerryon Johnson taking the realm, they may decide to go in a different direction with Theo Riddick. He’d be a perfect player on this Chiefs team.

Damien Williams has done an excellent job replacing Kareem Hunt. He’s been the everyday back they needed, but where they really miss Hunt is in his pass-catching ability. Hunt was averaging 14.5 yards per reception, while Williams was only good for half of that. They could use a real playmaker in the backfield when the play breaks down. We saw how important that play can be against the Patriots, when Mahomes found Williams all alone for a 23-yard touchdown to give the Chiefs their first lead.

Having that option on crucial downs will help the Chiefs in those close games they had trouble with this season. Riddick was used as a crutch on a bad Lions team. He would be used in a much better capacity on the Chiefs, and it would allow Williams to focus on his rushing ability, to really round out this offense.

If Riddick isn’t cut, or the Chiefs want to go in a cheaper option, Charles Sims is coming off an injury, and has no team to speak for. He would come at a league minimum contract, and could prove to be a very good change-of-pace back. If it didn’t work, they could move on for nothing. There’s plenty of other options. The point is, they could use a back who focuses on catching the ball when Mahomes breaks a play.
