Detroit Pistons

Sending out: Reggie Jackson (CHI), Henry Ellenson (WAS)

Bringing in: Kent Bazemore (ATL), Shabazz Napier (BRK), Yogi Ferrell (SAC)

The are no silver bullets for the Detroit Pistons, unfortunately. They’re locked into this Andre Drummond-Blake Griffin path at least through next season. In that constrained scenario, the best they really can hope for is to ensure that they are firmly a playoff team and hope that enough things (many, many, many things) break their way to the point that something other than winning a championship (which is not happening) can feel like a success.

The Pistons have supposedly been trying to unload Jackson for years but he’s just not appealing enough to any other teams to net them cap relief or draft picks. Here are they basically swap him out for Kent Bazemore, a player with a similar ceiling but whose defense and shooting on the wing are probably much more valuable than Jackson’s playmaking, in their current situation. In addition, they send out the sparsely used Ellenson to add a pair of back-up point guards behind Ish Smith. Neither are dramatic upgrades but both are good 3-point shooters, which Detroit desparately needs anywhere they can get it.
