If the Bradley Beal sweepstakes open up, and the Wizards really try to flip him, the Mavericks probably will not have the best package to offer. The Celtics surely can offer better picks and young players or maybe the Wizards like the Lakers’ young players more. Perhaps there’s a third, unexpected team that could join in too and blow Washington away.

But if Beal does become available, Dallas should go all-in to get him. For one, he’s a 25-year-old All-Star. Those are hard to get. Secondly, he’d be a great fit with Doncic. He’s a great off-ball shooter, but also a capable creator who could lead the offense when Doncic sits. It’s not quite Rick Carlisle’s style, but with Doncic and Beal, the Mavericks could have a team that runs everything through two players and scores a bunch; think of it as the LeBron-Kyrie Cavs-lite.

What could help Dallas here is a willingness to take on other salaries. They shouldn’t take on any awful money — John Wall’s contract is a non-starter — but would taking on Otto Porter Jr. be so bad if helps you get Beal? Perhaps Porter could be routed somewhere else, but he also wouldn’t be the worst fit even if the year-to-year salary is high. And just imagine how fun it would be to have Doncic throwing passes to Beal. It’s a pipe dream, but a fun one to consider.

Except for opposing defenses. This would suck for them.
