In this trade, the Knicks are able to get off the remaining salary that they owe Tim Hardaway Jr., while also helping the Lakers get Marc Gasol. The Grizzlies are trying to move on from Gasol and Mike Conley Jr., and this trade helps them accomplish one of those things.

The impetus for the Knicks is the desire to clear cap space for the summer to sign free agents to play alongside Kristaps Porzingis. For the Grizzlies, getting Brandon Ingram and Hardway, as well as a 2020 first round pick, is a nice get for a big that should dramatically help the Lakers.
