Luckiest jerseys in the NHL’s long and storied history
25. Anaheim Ducks
The Anaheim Ducks may currently be the unluckiest team in the NHL. They just can’t stop losing games, despite fielding a decent roster. When it rains, it pours in Anaheim, as they seem to get down early and then give up. Goal differential will be an issue for this team in the back half of the 2018-19 season. They need to learn how to rally.
Despite their current situation, thay actually have a storied history. The following list of players all spent significant time playing for the Ducks: Ryan Getzlaf, Corey Perry, Teemu Selanne, Paul Kariya, Scott Niedermayer, J.S. Giguere (Had two of the most legendary playoff runs in NHL history), Rob Niedermayer and Chris Pronger. Fans have had plenty to cheer for.
Every one of those players but Kariya were around for the Ducks’ first and only Stanley Cup in 2007. There’s hardly a need for luck when you have that much talent in the line up. The Ducks would go on to defeat the Ottawa Senators in five games.
Giguere set the tone in both of the Ducks’ Stanley Cup runs. First, in 2003, the goaltender put up unbelievable numbers, sporting a .945 save percentage and a 1.62 goals against average. He had five shut outs in the 21 playoff games (Which was second to Martin Brodeur that year, who had seven). The Ducks lost to the New Jersey Devils in seven games. Giguere was awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy.
In seasons past, they’ve been incredibly unlucky when it comes to injuries. Star players like Corey Perry, Ryan Getzlaf and goaltender John Gibson have all sustained multi-game injuries over the past few seasons. They just can’t seem to all stay healthy at the same time.
I’d be remiss to not mention the greatest Ducks jerseys of all time, though (worn by the real Mighty Ducks).
