7. Darius Rucker, South Carolina Gamecocks

Don’t call him Hootie — just don’t do it. Darius Rucker first came to fame in the mid-1990s as the lead singer of the immensely popular Hootie and the Blowfish. Since then, however, he’s become a well-known and accomplished solo act in the world of country music, which is surely a credit to his talent as an artist. Of course, this all started in South Carolina for him, and Rucker has never let that go as he’s a massive fan of the Gamecocks football team.

In fact, Rucker formed Hootie and the Blowfish while he was a student at the University of South Carolina, which is a fun wrinkle to the story. But outside of the musical ties to the university, there is simply the love for the Gamecocks that Rucker has put on display throughout his trip through the world of fame and notoriety.

Perhaps the biggest testament to Rucker’s fandom is a fun story about his concerts. While he’s performing — whether with the band or as a solo act — Rucker will often have a monitor on stage with him showing Gamecocks football whenever they are playing. That’s what you call dedication of a true fan. And, if that weren’t enough, he’s also done things like perform for South Carolina students for free, in addition to being a fan of the Gamecocks other athletic programs, particularly men’s basketball.

For the sake of Rucker, let’s hope that Will Muschamp can continue to build up the Gamecocks to get them back to competing at a high level in the SEC.
