25 best award show hosts
By Reed Gaudens
1. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler
Show: 70th Annual Golden Globe Awards (2013), 71st Annual Golden Globe Awards (2014), 72nd Annual Golden Globe Awards (2015)
Memorable Moments: When you think of Golden Globes hosts, you minds goes to one of two places: Rickey Gervais or Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. Both set the stage for what to expect from Hollywood’s least pretentious black-tie event. But where Gervais laid the blueprint of what not to replicate, Fey and Poehler put the oxygen back in the room. Their comedy was lighter, more precise and classic, and also just wackier. They played characters, ran extended bits, and accidentally started a feud with Taylor Swift back when she didn’t have a sense of humor about herself. Now that’s what you call a successful Golden Globes hosting residency.
Public Reception: Like Taylor Swift, we pay no mind to the haters. Whoever says that Tina Fey and Amy Poehler weren’t the best things to happen to the Golden Globes is an outright liar. Fans love them separately in 30 Rock and Parks and Recreation and together in movies like Baby Mama, Sisters, and Mean Girls. It’s only fitting that their friendship and kindred sense of humor would translate to an award ceremony that would be universally adored by diehard fans of the Fey-Poehler-verse and casual viewers.
Why They’re One of the Best: How do you explain what makes Tina Fey and Amy Poehler the best of the best award show hosts? Maybe it’s because they know what it’s like to be on the other side of stage at an event like the Golden Globes, and they know who they’re catering their comedy to. Maybe it’s that they know how it feels to be a nervous nominee and how to set a buoyant mood. Maybe it’s that they know the secret to performing to a live nationwide audience. But of all those advantages, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler rare simply two of the funniest, nicest, and boldest women, period. Hands down, they are the greatest. Full stop.
