20. Whoopi Goldberg

Show: 34th Annual Grammy Awards (1992), 66th Annual Academy Awards (1994), 68th Annual Academy Awards (1996), 71st Annual Academy Awards (1999), 74th Annual Academy Awards (2002), 62nd Tony Awards (2008)

Memorable Moments: EGOT winner Whoopi Goldberg hosted the Oscars four times (as well as the Grammys and Tonys once each), and each time she took the Academy Awards stage, she left her memorable mark with some sort of biting joke or extreme entrance. In 1996, Goldberg opened the show dressed as the African Queen and in 2002, she pulled a Lady Gaga at the Super Bowl and flew in from the ceiling. But beyond Goldberg’s enviable entrances, she has the honor of being the first African-American woman to host the Oscars.

Public Reception: Of course, when an entertain hosts a certain show more than one time, they run the risk of exhausting the audience and/or decreasing their comedic impact. Being so, not every year will be as positively received as the last. However, Whoopi Goldberg has landed herself on many “best Oscars hosts” lists outside of this one, but that’s not a surprising feat for the talented star.

Why They’re One of the Best: When you look at the stars who step up to host award shows, they have often been nominated for a number of awards, sometimes even the one they are handing out. Well, Whoopi Goldberg has all of them. She’s hosted the Grammys, Tonys, and Oscars, and she’s won them all. As Mariah Carey once said, that’s hard to get, not everybody has that to their credit. She’s one of the few famous faces on which most everyone can agree.
