One offseason move each NFL team must make
Philadelphia Eagles-Do Right By Nick Foles
The Eagles hold a $20 million option for next season on the Super Bowl LII MVP, who has finished the last two seasons as the starting quarterback in place of an injured Carson Wentz. They could pick up the option on Foles and trade him, decline the option but franchise tag him and trade him and Foles can also give back $2 million in order to become a free agent. That gives him unique control over his situation, which he should embrace it.
The Eagles have until just after the Super Bowl to exercise that option on Foles, then he has five days to give back the $2 million and be free.
It can be assumed the Eagles and Foles have discussed or will discuss all the outcomes that can/will bring about his exit, and they will work together to decide the best course for both sides. The Eagles surely don’t want to let him go for nothing, but they also remain committed to Wentz going forward and Foles should not care about the team getting something for him in a trade.
From this view, declining the option on Foles and letting him hit the open market is the move the Eagles have to make as a proverbial “thank you.” But if he’s open to a different arrangement, perhaps in lieu of a multi-year deal, then that’s the right course. Either way, the Eagles have to do right by Foles and make decisions with him fully informed and engaged.
