Round 1 – Pick 9

Montez Sweat, EDGE, Mississppi State

This draft should be about helping Josh Allen on the offensive side of the ball. It was a shame his best receiver was an undrafted free agent a year ago. Getting Zay Jones back from injury will help. However, Buffalo needs to avoid falling into the trap of reaching on players that fit needs. This roster is not strong enough for that tactic. There were players here like Alabama tackle Jonah Williams and Ole Miss wide receiver D.K. Metcalf that would have fit that mold. Instead the Bills need to take the best player available and at this point in the draft that was Mississippi State’s Montez Sweat.

Sweat is riding a high right now coming off a Senior Bowl where scouts raved about him all week. He checked the physical boxes in his weigh-in’s with octopus arms and stout frame. Sweat won all weak with excellent technique and scary power. This was stuff that team’s saw on tape all season.

Before Mobile, Sweat was a bit lost in the mix of a talented edge rusher class. He is not on the level of Nick Bosa or even Josh Allen. Sweat checks in right behind those two and may be closer to them than the players behind him. For Bufflao he would give them an edge rusher they desperately need. Jerry Hughes has been solid, but is losing steps as he ages. Shaq Lawson is a flat-out bust on the other side. Trent Murphy came as a free agent but did not look like an every down edge rusher. Sweat can come in and play the edge at a high level for this multiple front Bills defense while also being a solid run defender. He uses his long arms to keep tackles off of him. With a developed pass rush plan and a smart game, Sweat is the type of high ceiling player that fits the new mold in Buffalo and a slam dunk inside the top-10.
