Round 3 – Pick 71

JJ Arcega-Whiteside, WR, Stanford

Another pick to help Josh Allen and this offense. The original idea was to try and grab a tackle to compliment Dion Dawkins. There was not a single one available that would be able to step in and help. Instead the goal switched and the receiver position, an extremely deep group in the draft, was the go-to target.

J.J. Arcega -Whiteside is getting lost a bit in the mix of this receiver class. That may change with a good combine but he seems closer to the third round than the first. This is all despite a phenomenal season from the senior. Arcega-Whiteside has dominated the Pac 12 for two years, this year finishing with over 1000 yards and 14 touchdowns.

Where Arcega-Whiteside could help this team is in the red zone. The receivers currently in place are not the type of jump-ball, win contested catch types that can help Allen develop. That is where Arcega-Whiteside thrives. He is a 6-foot-3 basketball player posing as a receiver. Watch his tape and you routinely see him body defenders and high point the ball.

This pick could look silly if he blazes through the 40 yard dash in the combine, an unlikely scenario. What is more likely is we start hearing of him sliding due to lack of deep speed. Instead of worrying about what the guy can’t do, the focus should be on what he can do. He’s a solid player with the ball in his hands but wins in the air, and in the red zone. For a passer like Allen with a big arm, who can get erratic at times, a big body target like Arcega-Whiteside would be a blessing.
