2019 NFL Draft: Buffalo Bills 7 round mock draft
By Joe Romano
Round 5 – Pick 149
Ben Powers, G, Oklahoma
Let’s continue the “help Josh Allen” theme of this draft. This time continuing with the offensive line to keep him clean and not feel like he needs to run for 100 yards every week. Last year’s rookie guard Wyatt Teller played well and will get a crack at a starting spot again. Opposite him was John Miller and Ryan Groy, both of which are impending free agents. Buffalo still has Vlad Ducasse around but he should not be a starter.
A player that could step in and start is Oklahoma’s Ben Powers. This is an extremely deep interior offensive line class and Powers slide is strictly because of that. Teams who need guards and centers will be able to find them later in the draft like this. Powers held his own at the Senior Bowl and answered some questions about his anchoring ability and power. He’s a solid athlete, though a bit undersized. What he lacks in size he makes up for with a strong punch and lateral mobility. There are holes in his game but he’s more well-rounded than some may have thought earlier in the process.
Round 5 – Pick 159
Hamp Cheevers, CB, Boston College
The Buffalo Bills secondary is the team’s biggest strength. Second year corner Tre White is a lock-down player who has already exceeded his late-first round draft slot. Safeties Jordan Poyer and and Micah Hyde are an underrated duo who can dominate a game. Even rookie Taron Johnson flashed a year ago for the Bills. This is a solid group that is very well coached.
That does not mean talent cannot be added. Hamp Cheevers of Boston College would be a great addition. Cheevers led the country with seven interceptions and comes from a great secondary himself with the Eagles. He’s an underrsized corner at only 5-foot-10 and 180 pounds. However, his quick feet and active hands could make him an ideal sub-package corner inside. Cheevers would allow the Bills to continue to be creative in the secondary and add a versatile and athletic piece to a strong group.
