25. The Lego Movie

Not to sound dramatic, but The Lego Movie not being nominated for Best Animated Film at the 2015 Oscars is one of the most egregious snubs in Academy Awards history. Contrary to the original song that served as the film’s sole nomination, everything was not awesome.

The Lego Movie came out of nowhere to become one of the funniest, most inventive animated films in ages. It also had a huge heart, both empowering children to believe that they were all capable of being “The Special” and providing a visual tour de force for the power of imagination. It also made a killing at the box office and more than earned its upcoming sequel.

The worst part is that if it had been nominated, it probably would have won. Its only real competition in that category was Big Hero 6 and How to Train Your Dragon 2. It was a joke at the time when the fun but mediocre Big Hero 6 won, but it would’ve been more laughable if it had somehow beaten both How to Train Your Dragon 2 and The Lego Movie.

At least the film received a Best Original Song nomination for the aforementioned “Everything Is Awesome,” which made for a hilarious live performance. As nice as it would’ve been to see The Lego Movie honored in some way, it rightfully lost that category to “Glory” from Selma. No offense to Tegan & Sara and The Lonely Island, but their song didn’t bring David Oyelowo and Chris Pine to tears.
