5 bold Premier League predictions: Higuain scores against Manchester City
2. Niasse scores first Cardiff goals against Southampton
Looking at the other end of the table there’s one game that stands out as more important than any of the others as Southampton host Cardiff at St. Mary’s. Both teams are desperately fighting relegation and it could come down to the last day of the season to see which one of them does go down.
Cardiff occupy the last relegation spot while Southampton are just two points and two places above them in the table. A win for Neil Warnock’s side on Saturday would see them leapfrog their opponents and temporarily remove them from the relegation zone.
Southampton have looked much stronger under Ralph Hasenhuttl but they did lose to the Bluebirds in the reverse of this fixture earlier on in the season. Nathan Redmond and James Ward-Prowse have looked great since the Austrian coach took over and they will look to do the damage again this weekend.
Cardiff will have a tough time keeping Southampton’s key players out unless they improve upon the defensive side of their game. At times — like last week against Bournemouth — they’ve looked resilient at the back but for the majority of the season their defending has been shambolic.
The Bluebirds got a big win over Bournemouth last weekend and in doing so gave themselves hope in their relegation battle but they will need to maintain that level going forward. A big difference maker for the Welsh side has been the loan signing of Oumar Niasse.
Niasse is yet to grab his first goals for Cardiff but his presence up front and the runs that he makes in behind defenses has given his teammates more space as well as more goalscoring opportunities.
This was evident last weekend as Cardiff created plenty of good goalscoring chances and Bobby Reid bagged a double. This weekend Niasse’s hard work will pay off and he will score two crucial goals that will lead his side past Southampton.
