Here’s our boxing wish list of bouts we absolutely need to see this year
Canelo Alvarez vs Gennady Golovkin III
While there may be some fatigue when talking about these two, there are not many fights that would be more entertaining to watch. Both men are among the best fighters in the sport pound for pound, they are the two top fighters in the middleweight division, and their first two fights were full of action.
While the official record is one draw and one win for Canelo, most observers feel the first fight went GGG’s way, and a third fight would be a definitive conclusion to the rivalry.
Golovkin is certainly not ‘washed up’ as some like to say, but he is no longer in his prime, and although he lost their most recent encounter, he was very much in the fight and won a handful of rounds. A few adjustments could have very well won GGG one or two rounds, which would have given him the edge on the judges scorecards.
Another reason for making this fight is the potential to have an undisputed middleweight champion. Some things have to fall into place, but hear me out.
Canelo will be facing IBF champion Daniel Jacobs on May 4th, which means the winner will be the IBF, WBC and WBA champion. The last belt, the WBO, is owned by Demetrius Andrade. If GGG were to fight Andrade while Canelo fights Jacobs, and both Canelo and Golovkin emerge victorious, their third fight would also crown an undisputed middleweight champion.
Canelo figures to be the favorite if they were to meet, and it may not be much different than their second fight, but is that a problem? It was an instant classic, and one of the most exciting fights of the year.
