Here’s our boxing wish list of bouts we absolutely need to see this year
Vasiliy Lomachenko vs Mikey Garcia
The two best lightweight in the world, who are also both two of the best fighters pound for pound? Sign me up.
Lomachenko is viewed by most as the best fighter in the world, and Mikey isn’t too far behind him on the pound for pound list. Like Crawford-Spence, this is a true 50/50 matchup.
Mikey is the bigger of the two, he is a champion at jr. welterweight and will be debuting at welterweight in March. Lomachenko, on the other hand, appears to be at his limit in terms of weight. Jumping up any more weight classes would likely be too much, he does not look *as* dominate at lightweight as he was at lower weight classes.
Garcia has been around longer, and because of that, has more experience than Lomachenko. This experience, combined with his elite skills and being the naturally bigger fighter are all reasons why so many fans want to see this fight.
And while this does not determine anything about a fight with Lomachenko, it is worth noting that Mikey did defeat Orlando Salido in 2013, who is the only man to defeat Lomachenko.
Lomachenko is the consensus number one in the sport for a reason. It’s not just that he has amassed an impressive resume in just 13 fights, it is how spectacular he has looked. It is very hard to envision him losing to anyone in the sport (barring an opponent with an enormous weight advantage), aside from Garcia.
This fight may not be nominated for fight of the year, but the skill on display would be a joy to watch, and when the two best fighters in a division fight, it very rarely disappoints. Hopefully boxing politics don’t get in the way of this one.
