Gennady Golovkin vs Callum Smith

While GGG is still sorting out where he will be signing, it is still unsure who he will fight next.

The once longtime middleweight king is now entering the tail end of his career. He was one of the most dominate middleweight champions in history, and made a number of successful title defenses. He also has a win over Daniel Jacobs, and while he does not have an official win over Canelo, most feel he won their first fight.

Aside from a third fight with Canelo, or a fight with Jermall Charlo, there is not much left for GGG at middleweight, and that is why he should test the waters at super-middleweight.

After winning the World Boxing Super Series, Callum Smith has emerged as the top fighter at 168 lbs.

He is not as well-known around the world as Golovkin, but he put himself on the map with his performance in the WBSS. He would also have a size advantage over GGG, and if it took place in the U.K., would have the crowd behind him. A new weight class as well as hostile fans are things Golovkin is not used to dealing with, and it would be interesting to see how he adapted.

As well as being Golovkin’s debut at a new weight class, it would also serve as a huge step up for Callum Smith, who despite being the champion at super-middleweight, has never fought anyone on Golovkin’s level.

There would also be a lot on the line, side from the titles. A win for Smith would put him in the elite tier of active fighters, as well as gain a new level of popularity, while a win for Golovkin would move him even higher on the all time list, and ensure his spot in the hall of fame.

With so much intrigue surrounding this fight, it would be a missed opportunity if it were not made, especially if Golovkin signs with DAZN.
