Round 3 – Pick 72

Beau Benzschawel, G, Wisconsin

Cincinnati has checked two major boxes to deal with departing free agency and a depletion of talent with the first two rounds. Now it is time to address another position that was a sieve for the Bengals last season; guard. The season ended with incumbent starter Alex Redmond being benched for his penalties that were racking up. This team needs someone to step in and stabilize the position next to last year’s first round pick Billy Price.

The Bengals would be wise to stay in the same conference Price came from, the Big Ten. This time htey go futher north to Wisconsin and grab Badger guard Beau Benzschawel. As a member of Wisconsin’s heralded offensive line, Benzschawel produced back-to-back 2000 yard rushing seasons. The Badgers relied on that offensive line to carry them this past season and Benzschawel was a big component of that. His game is that of a powerful people mover and he’s not afraid to mix it up with anyone. Benzschawel combines excellent first punch with strong powerful short strides to uproot defensive tackles. While he is not the most fleet of foot, he is more than capable as a pass protector.

This is a deep interior offensive line class. The fact that those players get pushed down the board due ot positional value, will only help Cincinnati. There were marginally better players at this position in round two but the value of tight end then offensive lineman here was too good to pass up.  With Zach Taylor understanding the importance of offensive line play, expect Cincinnati to address it early, and possibly more than once in the 2019 NFL Draft.
