A run of three draws wouldn’t represent a mini-crisis for many clubs, but it’s perhaps more the performances in those games and the fact that two of them were played at home that’s worrying Barcelona fans. The same questions keep being asked at an ever-increasing volume: is Messi fit, will Coutinho be leaving and when will Luis Suarez recover his form. Jordi Alba will at least make a welcome return from suspension today, but Arthur is likely to remain absent with a hamstring injury until the beginning of March.
Barca’s need for a victory here is made even more desperate by the tough run of fixtures ahead. Four consecutive away games will begin with a Champions League tie in Lyon, who inflicted PSG’s first league defeat at the beginning of February, before a trip to Sevilla and two visits to the Santiago Bernabeu in the space of just four days.
Real Valladolid are currently 15th, three points above the drop zone, and simply avoiding relegation will represent a good season for the club. They lost 4-0 away to bottom-of-the-table Huesca at the start of February, so it’s hard to imagine a more ideal side for Barcelona to be facing right now.
