Cleveland Browns: 5 offseason needs in 2019
5. Find another receiver to go with Jarvis Landry
Jarvis Landry had his worst statistical season since his rookie year with the Miami Dolphins in 2014. Although, his ‘down’ 2018 was still a good year, it just wasn’t up to Landry’s typical standards.
81 catches, 976 yards and four touchdowns were still good enough to book Landry a ticket down to Orlando for his fourth-consecutive Pro Bowl. Now with a full-season with head coach Freddie Kitchens and offensive coordinator Todd Monken approaching, Landry will look to excel as the team’s number-one receiver.
However, this offseason they have to find a number-two receiver for Mayfield. The team’s second-leading receiver was tight end David Njoku. Antonio Callaway, selected in the fourth-round of last year’s draft, had an inconsistent rookie year.
Although, Callaway did disprove his critics and show he can be a big-play, downfield weapon. But he is not a move the chains, second wideout. More importantly, handing Mayfield another big-framed target would be ideal.
With a light and limited free agent class, the Browns may look to use one of their middle-round picks on a receiver in the upcoming NFL Draft. Potential draft prospects that come to mind are Iowa State’s Hakeem Butler and Arizona State’s N’Keal Harry.
Surrounding your young quarterback with an ample number of weapons at the offensive skill positions is crucial. With a solid backfield with Chubb, Duke Johnson and Kareem Hunt, to go with Njoku, Callaway and Landry, nabbing that true number-two receiver will provide Mayfield and the Browns with a ton of players to spread the ball around to.
