WWE Elimination Chamber 2019 review: Highlights, takeaways and projections

SmackDown Tag Team Championship Match
The Miz & Shane McMahon (c) vs. The Usos
Ahead of the SmackDown Tag Team Championship Match The Miz hit the stage first to congratulate Banks and Bayley on their historic win and also to make a big announcement to the WWE Universe, an announcement that became quite obvious when he brought Maryse out to join him. Baby No. 2 is on the way and while this was also an obvious way to plug Miz and Mrs., it was cute enough.
Shane McMahon was out next, joining his new tag team partner to take on The Usos, who were looking to win their sixth tag championship. Jimmy and Jey Uso are obviously the experienced team here but I will give The Miz and McMahon credit for looking like more of an actual tag team in this match. As I’ve said previously, I wasn’t crazy about this whole thing when it started but it has grown on me and they looked good here. The Usos worked the classic tag formula of isolating The Miz for a while before McMahon got the hot tag and turned things ahead of his big spot for the night, which he seemingly has to do every single time he steps in the ring.
Not only did we get McMahon going coast-to-coast, he also hit the bigger spot off the top turnbuckle to the announce table to exact a little revenge on Jey. This left The Miz and Jimmy to finish up the match inside the ring. It seemed that Miz had the upper hand but Jimmy was able to reverse a pinning combination to pick up the win. It’s always hard to follow up an Elimination Chamber Match, but these four did a great job.
What’s next: There was a good scene following the matchup that saw The Miz in apologetic mode for costing his team the matchup, which McMahon seemed to accept. There was then an exchange in the locker room later on that got a little more heated. Look, we all know what’s coming at some point. While this has been more entertaining than I imagined, it’s all a big setup for the breakup that will likely lead to a McMahon vs. Miz matchup at WrestleMania.
I know automatic rematches aren’t technically a thing anymore but McMiz likely still gets one at some point, perhaps at Fastlane next month and that’s probably where the split happens. Yes, the new champs aren’t the main topic of conversation here but they did look very good in this match as well and will hopefully get a big match of their own at WrestleMania. They’ve been one of the best teams of the past decade and deserve to be praised for what they do.
