Round 2 – Pick 55

Michael Deiter, G, Wisconsin

Last year when writing mock drafts, I did one where the Houston Texans spent every pick on an offensive lineman. That is how big of a need that is for this team. The 62 sacks likely would have been closer to 80 if Deshaun Watson was not the elite athlete that he is. It is not just the passing game but the rushing attack as well. Despite running the ball the fourth most, Houston was 18th in yards per attempt. This team needs talent up front to really let this offense get to another level.

Wisconsin’s Michael Deiter is the type of talented and versatile offensive lineman that can help Houston. Deiter is an experienced player on one of the nation’s top offensive lines in the country. He has helped pave the way to back-to-back 2000 yard rushing seasons for the Badgers top running backs.

Deiter has experience playing tackle, guard and center which should push him further up boards. His best position will be at guard where he can use his great feet and athleticism to either get in front of players on the zone or pull and wipe out incoming defenders. Deiter is a great pass blocker as well with a strong hand strike and low pad level to not get bullied back into the quarterback.

Houston, in this scenario would keep Nick Martin at center as he continues to develop. Deiter would step in and compete with Senio Kelemete and Zach Fulton for the two guard spots. Grabbing two high-end offensive line prospects will go a long way for Houston. Look at the impact it had on their division rivals, the Indianapolis Colts. This is the type of pick that makes waves throughout the entire offense.
