The Kansas City Chiefs held the No. 1 overall seed in the AFC playoffs heading into the postseason, after going 12-4 and beating out the Los Angeles Chargers due to a tiebreaker. The 2018 Chiefs season was headlined by first year starter Patrick Mahomes, who took the NFL by storm by throwing for over 5,000 yards and 50 touchdowns.

Some people felt that the Chiefs were crazy trading away Alex Smith, who had led the team to back to back AFC West titles, but obviously they knew what they were doing. Going forward, the Chiefs are going to have to get better on the other side of the ball, as it was their defense that really let them down in the playoffs.

Prior to the 2018 NFL season, the Chiefs traded away All-Pro cornerback Marcus Peters, and we’re never able to put the right pieces in place to fill that void. With their first round pick this April, they should look to bring in a guy like Trayvon Mullen from Clemson, who has the talent to start right away at the NFL level.

If this Chiefs team can get better on the defensive side of the ball, they should be the elite team in the AFC in 2019, and have the right guy under center to lead them to a Super Bowl. Andy Reid is one of the better head coaches in football, but he has not done that great in the playoffs, so that will be another hurdle this organization will have to overcome moving forward.
