Green Bay Packers free agency 2019: Top 5 targets
2. Tre Boston, Arizona Cardinals
The Green Bay Packers drafted Ha Ha Clinton-Dix in 2014. The organization decided to trade the safety on deadline day, rather than letting him hit the market as an unrestricted free agent.
General manager Brian Gutekunst flipped Clinton-Dix to the Washington Redskins in exchange for a 2019 fourth-round pick and avoided losing the safety for nothing. More importantly, Gutekunst traded an inconsistent player who would be looking for a big contract this offseason.
Even though Clinton-Dix has never missed a game in the NFL, he wasn’t reliable. Missed tackles, being out of position, misjudging passes are just a few things that have held him from making the next step in his career.
With him gone, the Packers finished the 2018 season with undrafted free agents Kentrell Brice and Jermaine Whitehead. As well as Josh Jones and Eddie Pleasant at the safety position.
Two former first-team All-Pros, Earl Thomas and Landon Collins lead this year’s unrestricted free-agent class. Eric Reid, who just re-signed with the Carolina Panthers, set the market for the position group, inking a three-year deal worth most than $22 million.
With that being said, the Packers must open up their wallets to upgrade this position and a solid option would be, Tre Boston. Boston spent last season with the Arizona Cardinals, where he played in 14 games, recorded 79 tackles, three interceptions and one forced fumble.
Over the last three seasons, Boston has played for three different teams; the Carolina Panthers, Los Angeles Chargers and Arizona Cardinals. During that span, he has played in at least 14 games each season, compiled two or more interceptions and recorded at least 52 tackles.
According to Pro Football Focus, Boston was the 24th-highest graded safety and his 74.1 overall grade was the second highest-graded season of his young career. What makes Boston a great option is his versatility and his ability to make in impact in the pass coverage and stopping the run.
